“The Island of the Winds” as is famously called, Mykonos is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, part of the Cyclades, the archipelago around the sacred island of Delos. It got that name because of the “Meltemi“, the cool northern winds that blow in the summer during the day, making the inhabitants even happy to get rid of the hot heat of the sun.
*Disclaimer: I am aware that there are places with stronger winds, but pleasure cruise ships do not arrive there or there are only expeditions there.
And if you are not from the area, but just a simple traveler who happened to get there on a cruise ship, the first thing you will discover is that you need a strong stomach to withstand the motion sickness caused by the continuous swings of the vessel. I’ve seen strong men who couldn’t stand being rocked anymore, making this situation really challenging. People imagine that it is the Mediterranean climate and all they expect to find is torrid heat and extravagant sandy beaches. Well, the sand was blown away by the wind and the weather forecast is not what they expected.
If you are not part of this category and maybe you really like undulating movements on the waves of the sea in the constant beating of the wind, then this place is for you.
Check out the video to see what a challenging experience we had, on water and on land. For us it was not unpleasant, but it was the windiest experience over the years.
In many days Meltemi is just a pleasant breeze that will make your experience in Mykonos unforgettable. On our website cruisetravelvideos.com or YouTube channel @CruiseTravelVideos we have several clips from Mykonos that show that the weather is not always difficult.
