Most ignored deck on Symphony of the Seas

Important Memories on a Cruise

The most cherished memories from a cruise often come from the delightful moments spent on board. For some of us, these moments are tied to familiar activities and routines. For others, the most unforgettable experiences are from trying new and exciting things.

As soon as we step on board, our sense of adventure kicks in, and exploration becomes our top priority. During the first couple of days, we eagerly investigate every corner of the ship, making sure no part goes unnoticed. After this initial exploration, we settle into enjoying each activity, taking the time to savor and remember every experience.

A Modern Turn in the Cruise Industry

In recent years, and most recently this year, the cruise industry has taken a modernist direction and has transformed so much that if you had taken a 10-year break, boarding a new ship, you simply wouldn’t know where you were: an amusement park, a waterpark, or even a complex resort. This transformation aims to attract new passengers, much younger and with different interests. Additionally, it aims to spread passengers more widely across the ship to prevent bottlenecks and overcrowding. Unfortunately, the introduction of new attractions has led to the neglect of those we were already accustomed to.

The Forgotten Deck

One of the most visited decks on a cruise ship has today become the most ignored. Once bustling due to activities we now consider mundane, only a few of these activities remain available. Although on some modern ships, like those from Norwegian Cruise Line or partially on MSC, there has been an effort to integrate the outer promenades into daily activities, such as jacuzzis or even restaurant access along with their terraces, on other ships they are used mainly for boarding, for security reasons, or sometimes as jogging tracks. Additionally, lifeboats and their associated utilities have been mounted on or near these promenades, causing the visual contact with the sea to almost disappear completely, which is unfortunate. The most important place for saltwater aerosols was right there, on the outer promenade, away from the exhaust stack that can be so bothersome in many situations.

The Disappearing Charm of the Wooden Walkaway

The walkaway around the ship, with wooden decks made of pine, ash, or oak, comfortable loungers facing the sea, and thin metal taffrails, has almost completely disappeared on some modern ships. You can no longer sunbathe or sit quietly listening to the waves crashing against the hull of the cruise ship. Often, even the seagulls are no longer heard. This is partly because, to keep the populated areas as quiet as possible, the vents and fans of the air conditioning systems have been installed on this deck. Sometimes, this deck is also used for transporting industrial carts used in the daily activities of the crew. While this is practical, all these changes have stolen the charm of yesteryear that many of us fondly remember.

In an attempt to uncover important and interesting facts, I toured the outer deck, now called the Jogging Deck, located on deck 5 of the cruise ship Symphony of the Seas. I invite you to watch the video below, and on your next cruise, I am sure you will take at least one tour or admire the sea from the lowest level of the ship.
